MTN increases recharge PIN to 17-digit on vouchers

by
MTN Nigeria has increased the number of digits for the "RECHARGE PINS" on vouchers from 16 to 17 digits.

Don't be alarmed if on your next recharge from a MTN scratch card, you type in 17 digits instead of 16.
MTN-new-17-digit-Recharge-PIN

This will affect MTN Scratch Cards of all denomination, the digits in the recharge card you will type in the process of loading MTN recharge cards will be 17.

Despite the change the old 16 digit vouchers remain valid and useable. Also, whether you recharge a 16 or 17 digit pin code the value of the airtime remains the same.

Recall that in 2016, the foremost telecom operator increased the number of recharge pin digits from 12 to 16.

Why?

Prepaid recharge pins or voucher activation codes are generated and stored in a server called Voucher Server.

According to Quora, in the voucher recharge, a subscriber generally dials a USSD short code which includes voucher activation code ( eg: *555*35353899399390#). Then if the voucher code is correct, the account is credited with recharge amount.

If a network provider runs out of of possible number combination for code generation, an extra digit would be added to expand the range of activation or recharge pins.

An extra digit on the code might made available, up to 1 billion possible recharge pins for use.

Guide to Protecting your PC from Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws

by
Two simultaneous CPU flaws exposed this week have serious ramifications for most home computer users. The two flaws; Meltdown and Spectre let attackers access protected information in your PC’s kernel memory, potentially revealing sensitive details like passwords, cryptographic keys, personal photos and email, or anything else you’ve used on your computer.

To combat this serious security flaw, CPU and operating system vendors have pushed out patches fast, and you can protect your PC from Meltdown and Spectre to some degree.

It’s not a quick one-and-done deal, though. There are two very different CPU flaws that touch every part of your operating system, from hardware to software to the operating system itself.

This guide focuses on how you can protect your computer against the Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws.
Intel-CPU

How to protect your PC against Meltdown and Spectre CPU flaws

Here’s a quick step-by-step checklist.

  • Update your operating system
  • Check for firmware updates
  • Update your browser
  • Keep your antivirus active

First, and most important: Update your operating system right now. The more severe flaw, Meltdown, affects “effectively every [Intel] processor since 1995,” according to the Google security researchers that discovered it. It’s an issue with the hardware itself, but the major operating system makers have rolled out updates that protect against the Meltdown CPU flaw.

Where to update Windows 10.

Microsoft pushed out an emergency Windows patch late in the day on January 3. If it didn’t automatically update your PC, head to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, then click the Check now button under “Update status.” (Alternatively, you can just search for “Windows Update,” which also works for Windows 7 and 8.) Your system should detect the available update and begin downloading it. Install the update immediately.

Settings-Windows-Updates

If you don’t see it for whatever reason, you can download the Windows 10 KB4056892 patch directly here. You’ll need to know whether to grab the 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) version of the update.

To determine if your PC runs a 32- or 64-bit version of Windows, simply type “system” (without the quotation marks) into Windows search and click the top listing. It’ll open a Control Panel window. The “System type” listing will tell you which version of Windows you’re running. Most PCs released in the past decade will be using the 64-bit operating system.

Are Apple MacOS, Chromebook or Linux machines affected?

Apple quietly worked Meltdown protections into macOS High Sierra 13.10.2, which released in December. If your Mac doesn’t automatically apply updates, force it by going into the App Store’s Update tab.

Chromebooks should have already updated to Chrome OS 63 in December. It contains mitigations against the CPU flaws.

Linux developers are working on kernel patches. Patches are also available for the Linux kernel.

Now for the bad news.

The operating system patches will slow down your PC, though the extent varies wildly depending on your CPU and the workloads you’re running. Intel expects the impact to be fairly small for most consumer applications like games or web browsing. You still want to install the updates for security reasons.

World’s Smallest Phone with 32GB Fits into Your Wallet

by

While most manufacturers are pushing on the big screens and bezel-less, a company in UK is pushing through what would be described as the world’s smallest fully functional mobile phone.

It is so tiny; it can fit into your wallet or front pocket comfortable with spaces left.

The UK-based company Clubit New Media last week introduced Zanco Tiny T1, the smallest fully functional mobile phone “in the world.”

A little bigger than your thumb and lighter than a coin, this cute device operates on 2G, with a 200mAh battery boasting 180 minutes talk time and 3 days standby time. It comes with a nano-SIM slot.

It comes with a surprisingly readable and bright 12.5mm OLED screen and crumb-sized keys; this may be the right emergency phone for you. It actually fits in that seemingly useless little pocket on your jeans or running leggings.

According to Clubit New Media/Kickstarter, the phone is “perfect for joggers, runners, walkers, cyclists, and those who take part in extreme sports, because it’s so compact it can go in any size pocket”.

It is also good news for parents who want a way of being able to contact their young kid, without necessarily exposing them to the dangers of online influences and cyberbullying.

Expected to ship anywhere in the world by May 2018, the Zanco Tiny T1 bar phone is equipped with 32GB of storage: enough to hold up to 300 phone numbers and 50 SMS texts.

You can pre-order your Zanco Tiny T1 on kickstarter  for £30 ($40).

Facebook to Start Demoting Posts With Engagement Bait

by

Facebook has announced a new policy that should cut down on a lot of spammy garbage from your timeline. Going forward, all posts that ask users to engage with them in any way will be demoted and buried out of view.

Spammy posts that goad users into interacting with likes, shares, comments, and other actions. For example, “LIKE this if you’re an Aries!” This tactic, known as “engagement bait,” seeks to take advantage of FB News Feed algorithm by boosting engagement in order to get greater reach.

So, starting from this week, Facebook will begin demoting individual posts from people and Pages that use engagement bait. Facebook is currently giving a warning period to publisher’s time to adapt and stop their engagement baiting techniques before rolling out the changes.

Pages who continue to do so will see significantly reduced reach for their posts and eventually the entire page itself.
